Internship Courses

One of the biggest challenges that both students and education institutions face is bridging the gap between college/school education and the practical knowledge to take up a job and start working. There often seems to be a knowledge gap between the education curriculum and the wisdom needed for a graduate to transition from college to actual work. Internship is a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work that is done in an actual business environment a student is studying in or has a passion for.

An internship gives a student the opportunity to explore and develop practical real-life skills. Whereas for the employer, this is an opportunity to bring new ideas and energy into the workplace as the interns may have fresh perspectives on the challenges the business is facing leading to new potential solutions. Furthermore it helps the business develop a talent pool, a pipeline for future full-time employees that the organization may have identified when students were their interns.

Students working in an internship may work on a part time or full time schedule and their responsibilities may include part technical and part clerical or administrative jobs. It provides them a clear idea of work carried out in an organization and prepares them to fit into an organizational culture, making them capable of handling assigned work. The internship can greatly aid the students develop and achieve their learning goals by offering them regular feedback and filling in knowledge gaps.

This is because Internships are supervised by subject matter experts who possess expertise in the line of work. Often the companies hosting these internships structure their program to provide the students valuable learning experiences in a professional setting that allow them to gain valuable work experience in a student’s chosen field of study. These short-term work experiences offered by companies and other organizations are often an excellent way to get exposure  to entry level jobs in a particular industry.  It is as much of a learning experience as it is work. Ideally, interns spend their time working on relevant projects, learning about the field, making industry connections, and developing both hard and soft skills.

Why you should do an internship

Being a student, an internship will give you a chance to work side by side with accomplished industry professionals and get a pretty good idea of what an entry-level role might entail. You’ll not only gain real work experience, but also meet and learn from the professional subject matter experts. Furthermore, you get an opportunity to network and start building your own professional connections with or through your fellow interns or the full time professionals you are working with.

Students often make career decisions based on presumptions of a certain job role and often don’t actually know facts about the field. Most of what they know is from the opinions of other people working in the industry which are mostly subjected to their personal bias and their own agenda. What works for others may not necessarily work for you. Internships give you a chance to actually explore and experience these jobs first hand and help you figure out if this is what you want to do.

You may more likely start with a vague idea of what you want to do and It’s often difficult to know where to even start when it comes to job searching. Internships give you the chance to try a few things out without committing. If you’re lucky, you’ll find something you love. And if not, you’ll at least know what doesn’t work for you. When it comes to something as tricky as finding the right career, the more information you have to work with, the better.
